Users coming from earlier versions of Internet Explorer may notice that the File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help menus are now missing. The reason is that the menu bar is now hidden by default. However, it may be accessed by using one of two options. Select a link below for how to view this menu, as well as troubleshooting options if it won't display.
NoteIf you are using Microsoft Edge, the replacement for Internet Explorer in Windows 10, the File, Edit, and View menus are not available. Microsoft does not include these menus in Microsoft Edge.
Temporarily show the File, Edit, View menu
Pressing the Alt key will temporarily show this menu and allow users to use any of its features. The menu bar will be located right below the Address bar, in the upper-left corner of the browser window.
NoteOnce a selection is made from one of the menus, the bar will be hidden again.
Permanently show the File, Edit, View menu
If you want to have the File, Edit, View menu always shown, like in previous versions of Internet Explorer, follow the steps below.
- Press the Alt key to show the menu bar temporarily.
- Click View (A), and select Toolbars from the drop-down menu that appears (B).
- Click Menu bar.
- A check mark will appear next to the Menu bar option, indicating that it will now be permanently visible.
If pressing the Alt key does not make the menu bar visible, try pressing Alt+V. This keyboard shortcut opens the View menu, even if the menu bar is hidden.
TipTo make the menu bar autohide again, repeat the steps above.
Browser in full-screen mode
If Internet Explorer is set to run in full-screen mode, the menu bar will not be visible, even if it is enabled. However, if you move your mouse cursor to the very top of the screen, the menu bar will become visible.
To exit full-screen mode, press the F11 key on your keyboard. Check to see if the menu bar is now visible or if pressing the Alt key makes it visible.
Menu bar won't display
If you've tried the steps above and the menu bar is still not accessible, your Internet Explorer installation may be corrupt or damaged. It is also possible that your computer has a virus or malware infection that is preventing the menu bar from being displayed.
If the problem is your Internet Explorer installation, it may be necessary to uninstall and then re-install it. Alternatively, if there is a newer version of Internet Explorer available, try updating to the latest version. Doing so may fix the problem.
In the case of a virus or malware infection, you should use an antivirus and anti-malware software program to clean your computer and remove the infection. Malwarebytes, Webroot SecureAnywhere, and Kaspersky Internet Security are excellent software programs for removing virus and malware infections, as well as preventing future ones. You can also try one of the many free antivirus and anti-malware programs available on the Internet.
Additional information
- See the menu bar definition for further information and related links.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 11 browser hides the top menu bar by default. The menu bar contains the browser's primary menus File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help. Hiding the menu bar does not make its features inaccessible; rather, it simply expands the area the browser can use to display a Web page's content. You can easily access the menu bar and all of its features at any point.
Alternatively, you can choose to display it permanently if you prefer to work with it visible.
On Windows 10, the default browser is Microsoft Edge rather than Internet Explorer. The menu bar is completely absent from the Edge browser, so cannot be displayed.
How to Show the Menu Bar in Internet Explorer
You can show the menu bar either temporarily or set it to display unless you explicitly hide it.
- To temporarily view the menu bar: Make sure that Explorer is the active application (by clicking somewhere in its window), and then press the Alt key. At this point, selecting any item in the menu bar displays until you click elsewhere on the page; then it becomes hidden again.
- To set the menu bar to remain visible: Right-click the title bar above the URL address bar in the browser and tick the checkbox next to Menu Bar. The menu bar will display unless you check the box again to hide it.
Alternatively, press Alt (to show the menu bar), and select the View menu. Choose Toolbars and then Menu Bar.
